Heritage Day 2023

The Mathews Maritime Heritage Festival is back this year and will take place both at the Museum at 482 Main Street AND at the Gwynn’s Island Boat Shop on Old Ferry Rd. There will be music, food, activities and exhibits, storytelling, boats, and lots of rich maritime history.

When: Saturday, 9/30/23
Time: 10AM-4PM
Where: Mathews Maritime Museum and Gwynn’s Island Boat Shop

Enjoy oyster harvesting (shucking and grilling) at the Gwynn’s Island Boat Shop, view the Yellow Submarine, see the collection of antique outboard motors, and the historic deck boat Peggy along with Gilbert Klingel’s Freya will be at the dock. Larry Chowning will be there to sign books, along with other local exhibitors.

(Please note that the Gwynn’s Island Bridge is currently under maintenance and you may have a brief wait at the light.)

Gilbert Klingel’s Green Heron will be on display at the Mathews Maritime Museum, and Benn Trask will be signing his book, Lighthouses of Southeast Hampton Roads. Bring the family by for games and face painting while you enjoy barbeque by Backwoods BBQ and country music. There’s more Mathews history and exhibits to explore, so visit both locations on the 30th.
